What is Electrophysiology?
Electrophysiology (EP) studies measure the electrical activity of the heart to determine the source of an arrhythmia, a heart rhythm abnormality that may indicate a serious problem and can lead to heart disease, stroke or even death. An arrhythmia may be suspected when a physician hears a fast or irregular heartbeat while listening to the heart with a stethoscope.
Benefits of Electrophysiology
EP results help doctors diagnose a patient’s type of arrhythmia to determine the best course of treatment, which might include medications, a pacemaker, an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), cardiac ablation or surgery.
The specially trained cardiac electrophysiologists affiliated with Memorial Hermann provide a full scope of EP diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including inserting pacemakers and performing ablations, to evaluate and manage all types of arrhythmias.
