The Heart Valve Clinic at Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute-Southwest was developed to address often confusing conditions that can be indicated by heart murmurs. Physicians affiliated with the clinic will determine if these murmurs are indicators of more life-threatening conditions such as severe aortic stenosis, one common condition that causes heart murmurs.
Dr. Vargas on Great Day Houston
Affiliated heart surgeon Dr. Gonzalo Vargas stopped by the set of Great Day Houston to discuss heart attack warning signs.
What is a Heart Murmur?
Four valves control the flow of blood through the chambers of the heart and out of the heart. The heartbeat sounds are the sounds of the valves closing. A heart murmur is an extra sound besides the first and second heart sounds. The extra sound is created by the turbulent blood flow created when an aortic valve does not close tightly (such as with mitral regurgitation) and blood leaks backward. They can also occur when the blood flows though a narrowed or stiff valve (such as with aortic stenosis).
Experts at the Heart Valve Clinic can identify the valve involved and whether you have a form of valve disease during an exam based on the location, quality and timing of the murmur.
What is Aortic Stenosis?
Aortic stenosis is one of the most dangerous conditions associated with heart murmur. In aortic stenosis, the aortic valve does not open fully, which restricts blood flow. Aortic stenosis may be present from birth (congenital), or it may develop later in life (acquired). Learn more.
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)
For high-risk patients who are not eligible for traditional open heart surgery, there is now a minimally-invasive treatment option. The Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) is an innovative procedure that is only being performed at a handful of sites around the country. The Heart Valve Clinic at Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute-Southwest is the only approved site for this procedure in Houston outside of the Texas Medical Center. Learn more about this innovative treatment.
