Out of Control: Houston’s roads, drivers are country’s most deadly
9/5/2018
Personal stories and statistics reveal what is often at the root of Houston's growing fatality count: a pervasive, ingrained culture of speeding. "The striking thing is how fast people drive," said Dr. Chip Routt, an orthopedic trauma surgeon with Memorial Hermann Hospital, who spent years handling ER patients in Seattle. "I thought I had a good barometer of violence and trauma until I came here."

9/4/2018
Almost a year to the day after Hurricane Harvey dumped 51 inches of rain on the greater Houston area, a sea of blue-clad Memorial Hermann employees went into the community to give back. To commemorate the anniversary of the devastating hurricane, more than 1,400 Memorial Hermann employees system took part in Hometown Healing, a city-wide volunteer event the weekend of Aug. 24 and 25. “There was a certain sense of community during Hurricane Harvey, and we wanted to revive it by giving back,” said Josh Urban, CEO of Memorial Hermann The Woodlands.
What you need to know about prostate cancer awareness
9/4/2018
September is National Prostate Health Month and millions of men get the diagnosis every year. One in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Dr. Adam Hollander, with Memorial Hermann Medical Group Greater Heights, said that because of those high numbers he could probably diagnose a new patient every day. "I would certainly encourage anyone in the target age group, sort of 50s to 70s, to talk to their doctor about prostate cancer screening," Hollander said.
Heart attacks during pregnancy on the rise
9/4/2018
There is a 25 percent increase in heart attacks among pregnant women since 2002, according to one Mayo Clinic study. Doctors say it's important to recognize the symptoms, but they're often hard to identify. Dr. Diana Racusin, a maternal-fetal medicine physician at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, who also sees patients at UT Physicians and Memorial Hermann, said due to more women coming into pregnancy with high blood pressure, obesity and older age, there is a higher risk of heart attacks happening in those cases.

Eugene Alford, a facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Houston Methodist Hospital, decided to skip church and spend the day on his 86-acre farm in Bellville, 70 miles west of Houston. He hopped on his tractor, a 20th anniversary present from his wife, Mary, and started mowing the pasture.

Amid a rush of adrenaline, she drove herself to the emergency room, where she was treated and referred out for physical therapy at Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute.

8/29/2018
Singer Pink's husband, Carey Hart, is being shamed by some parents for taking their 1-year-old son out in public after recently revealing he has hand, foot and mouth disease. According to Dr. Michael Chang with Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital and UT Health, this is the time of year when cases of the illness spike, especially when kids go back to schools and day cares. "The virus is very contagious. It spreads quickly," Dr. Chang said. "It's mostly spread through droplets and secretions."
Catsuits, compression socks and Serena Williams
8/28/2018
Bernard Giudicelli, president of the French Open, said recently that the catsuit Serena Williams wore to compete in May was not appropriate tennis attire and that players would have to dress more conservatively in the future. Williams said it helped with circulation. Melissa Abellanida, a physical therapist with Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute, makes a distinction between compression garments worn by athletes to optimize performance and compression garments worn by patients after surgery.
Heroes of Harvey
8/26/2018
Someday, when Reid Thomas Dolan is old enough, he'll hear the story of his birth and why he was almost named Harvey. It will have hurricanes and flooding, evacuations and emergencies. There will be emotions held in check and tears shed in private. There will be a monster — and, of course, a hero, his mother Jessica Dolan, a nurse at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center’s neonatal intensive care unit.
