General Information

The award-winning Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute - Memorial City offers patients one of the most advanced cardiovascular care facilities in the nation with advanced diagnostic screenings, catheterization labs, three interventional radiology suites, electrophysiology labs and minimally invasive surgical suites. Our team of affiliated specialists treats close to 11,000 patients annually, providing the full spectrum of heart care - from medical therapy to minimally invasive heart surgery.

Diagnostics and Minimally Invasive Interventions

The Heart & Vascular Institute–Memorial City employs the full range of diagnostic and non-surgical interventions from cardiac CT and nuclear medicine studies to angiography (catheterization) and carotid stenting, all within the Institute. Our four cardiac catheterization (cath) labs have undergone a complete upgrade and are equipped with state-of-the art equipment. The experienced team of affiliated cardiologists and electrophysiologists at Memorial Hermann Memorial City performs more than 3,000 cath lab procedures annually and have specialized training in advanced treatment options for those suffering from coronary artery disease.

Robotic Cardiac Surgery

Memorial Hermann Memorial City differentiates itself with innovative affiliated specialists who can treat virtually any type of heart or vascular condition, regardless of severity or complexity. In addition to offering traditional and minimally invasive heart and vascular surgeries, our renowned surgeons perform intricate robotic cardiac surgeries. For patients who qualify, robotic cardiac surgery can mean significantly shorter recovery times and less risk.

Exceptional Heart Attack Care

From the moment a blood clot forms and a patient experiences the first symptom of a heart attack, a race against time begins. Angioplasty, one of the most effective treatments for a heart attack, involves inflating a tiny balloon at the point of blockage in an artery. This is significant because every minute the artery is blocked, more heart muscle dies. The Institute at Memorial City maintains excellent compliance with evidence-based standards set for door-to-balloon times - that is, the time it takes to open a blocked artery with angioplasty. In fact, our average door-to-balloon time is well below the crucial 90 minute window set by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association.

The Institute has also developed the Heart Attack Network program to help heart patients in more rural areas receive lifesaving care. The Institute partners with affiliated interventional cardiologists, hospitals and emergency medical teams in rural counties in Southeast Texas, where state-of-the-art cardiac catheter care is not readily available. Heart attack patients are flown via Memorial Hermann LifeFlight® to the Institute for life-saving treatment - within the critical 90-minute window.

State-of-the-Art Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery

The cardiothoracic and vascular surgery team at the Institute is highly experienced and offers a wide range of advanced surgical options for heart patients - from performing more than 60% of coronary bypass surgeries on beating hearts (without a heart-lung machine) to offering minimally invasive replacement of the heart's aortic valve.

The Institute is consistently recognized by national third-party organizations that measure surgical quality for low complication rates and excellent patient outcomes. Memorial Hermann Memorial City was honored by Healthgrades with the Cardiac Surgery Excellence Award for its superior clinical outcomes in heart bypass surgery and heart valve surgery. It was also recognized by Healthgrades as #3 in the state of Texas for cardiac surgery. Memorial Hermann Memorial City was also awarded a Platinum Level award, the highest level available, from NCDR for our Chest Pain/Acute Myocardial Infarction level of quality.

Leader in Electrophysiology

With advanced cardiac catheterization labs and an experienced team of affiliated interventional cardiologists and electrophysiologists, treating electrical problems of the heart, such as atrial flutter and atrial fibrillation, is one of our specialties. Advanced heart-mapping technology allows physicians to pinpoint conduction abnormalities in the heart and identify irregular electrical pathways causing arrhythmias, or heart rhythm abnormalities. For instance, electrophysiologists perform an advanced procedure called atrial fibrillation ablation, which normalizes irregular beating of the heart with radiofrequency energy. The procedure greatly improves quality of life and longevity for patients with the disorder. Our team is also equipped to perform highly complex atrial fibrillation ablation revisions.

Additionally, the Institute performs implantation of rhythmic management devices such as a pacemaker, implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) or biventricular ICD.

Patients at Memorial Hermann have access to the latest options for left atrial appendage closure devices. These are small parachute-shaped devices that permanently close off the left atrial appendage (LAA), a site where clots can form and increase the risk of stroke. The device permanently closes off this part of your heart to keep those blood clots from escaping.

Memorial Hermann Memorial City offers WATCHMAN FLXand AMULET left atrial appendage closure devices for patients.

Advanced Vascular Care

The Institute provides comprehensive, advanced vascular and endovascular care including non-invasive diagnostic testing, percutaneous interventional vascular treatments such as angioplasty and stents, surgery for conditions such as abdominal aortic aneurysm, deep vein thrombosis, peripheral arterial disease, venous insufficiency and carotid stenosis. The affiliated physicians and health care teams have the range of knowledge and specialization necessary to effectively treat this complex disease.

The Institute is equipped with a state-of-the-art hybrid endovascular surgical suite designed specifically for vascular and cardiovascular patients. A hybrid surgery suite essentially combines the capabilities of a cardiac catheterization lab and operating room into a single suite allowing flexibility and speed in the treatment of patients with the most complex cardiac and vascular conditions. Minimally invasive treatment procedures done in the hybrid endovascular suite include:

The Institute at Memorial City also has a neuro-endovascular suite where a full spectrum of endovascular services is performed, from diagnostic angiography to endovascular surgery for complex conditions of the brain, including aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation, skull base tumors and stroke (thrombectomy).

Complete Continuum of Care with Cardiac Rehabilitation

Whether you’ve have had a heart attack, bypass surgery, angioplasty, heart transplant, valve replacement, or have angina, congestive heart failure or any other cardiac-related illness, you can benefit from our cardiac rehabilitation program. Located on the Memorial Hermann Memorial City campus, our goal is to help people with heart disease participate actively and confidently in their own recovery so they can return, as much as possible, to the life they enjoyed before heart disease.

The cardiac rehabilitation program is a phased, multidimensional, medically supervised program designed to help patients recover as quickly as possible from heart disease. With a comprehensive focus on exercise, education and lifestyle change, the program is designed to improve overall physical and mental functioning. Patients who participate in a cardiac rehabilitation program following heart surgery or a diagnosis of heart or vascular disease tend to have better outcomes in managing their condition.

The Cardiac Wellness Center has been granted full certification by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR).
